Many studies have shown that children who learn a musical instrument have better mathematical,verbal memory, literacy and visual processing skills as well as a higher IQ.When playing an instrument, you activate the left and right sides of the brain; activities which engages both sides of the brain, increases the learning ability. It is said that processing information activates the left side of your brain and the music you listen to triggers the right side; therefore, you can learn and understand things more efficiently. Learning Music is more effective than listening to it, people who take music lessons tend to have a better memory compared with children who do not.
Some people listen to Mozart's music because they believe that it can improve their IQ. The idea of the "Mozart Effect" started from Alfred A. Tomatis who said it helped the ears, this started the theory that listening to Mozart's music healed you and made you smarter. To some people, listening to Mozart's music only temporarily enhances your mental skills but on the other hand, there are some people who display no difference in their mental performance.
Music does not only influence the human brain, it can also effect the minds of animals. There have been various studies done on dogs where different sorts of music are played to dogs at an animal shelter. When classical music such as The Four Seasons, Greigs Morning were played, the dogs became calm and sleepy. But when heavy metal songs were played, the dogs began to bark and became agitated.

It even helps people with various mental disorders. A lot of people thought that listening to classical music, espcially pieces written by Mozart would enhance your performance on cognitive tests. On the other hand, recent studies have shown that listening to music you personally like, will also have a positive affect on mental tests. Music does not only improve concentration and attention, music with different structures all help in different ways; there have been many studies which have shown such convincing effects.
